Dreaming of Your Face

Both of these songs have so much passion in them. I've had Hinder's song stuck in my head a lot lately and who doesn't love 3 Doors Down!

>Hinder-Lips Of An Angel

"...and yes, I dreamt of you too."

3 Doors Down-Here Without You
"...dreaming of your face."

How to Find Work You Love

Are you looking for work, considering changing careers, or interested in starting your own business? Would you like to find work you love? Below you will find simple tips I picked up while listening to Dr Susan Bernstein's Work From Within radio show.

Job Search Process
  • Look over your resume. Ask yourself, "What employers would connect with this resume?"
  • Get in touch with people you know and ask for their ideas.
  • Join Linkedin and connect with professionals in the field.
  • Find ways to connect with more people.
Changing Careers
  • Network- Join Linkedin. Ask friends.
  • Ask yourself, "What would I like to be doing?"
  • While you are looking for work, get a sustenance job in the meantime (to be able to afford food and shelter). Ex/Temp jobs, work at a coffee shop, etc.
  • Ask yourself, "What are the skills, talents and abilities that I want to be using right now?"
  • What does the future look like for you?
  • Keep a journal during this process.
Starting a Business
  • Begin with the end in mind: How will you feel? What will it look like?
  • How do you want to be of service?
  • Be clear about your audience: Try out a few different audiences; Ask yourself, "Who do I want to connect with and why?"
  • Speak in your audience's language: What is the benefit of your business? Describe so people can recogize themselves in who you help.

Locket Earrings

For the past month or so I have been thinking about locket necklaces. Last night, while watching a show I was mesmerized by a pair of earrings an actress was wearing. They reminded me of little lockets but for the ears. I wanted to know right then and there if such earrings were available on the market. I am so excited because I just purchased a pretty little pair of gold locket earrings on Etsy for a mere $14. I think I will give them to my neice for her birthday. They will look so pretty on her.

Thinking About 2011

With the new year upon us I have started thinking about my goals for 2011. Instead of resolutions I like to set goals instead. I think resolutions are too vague, are too easy to abandon, and create disappointment when you don't do what you set out to resolve. Whereas goals are more specific, are easier to work towards in small steps, and give you a sense of accomplishment as you follow through on your action plan. Here is an example of the difference between a resolution and a goal:

Resolution: Lose Weight
Action Plan: Join a gym, eat better
This is too vague! How much weight do you want to lose? What are you going to do at the gym? What are you going to do differently in your diet? What happens if you can't make it to the gym or you don't have time to eat healthy? This scenario creates too much room for disappointment when you do not see results.

Goal: Lose 20 pounds
Action Plan: Take 1-2 aerobics classes, sign up for a personal training session, take a yoga class, talk to a hynotherapist about weight loss, walk for 10 minutes during lunch break for a month, drink 8 glasses of water per day; eat salad 2 lunches per week
This is specific, and gives you concrete plans to take the weight off! You will feel good as you follow through on your action plan and should start to see results.

With all that said, I read an awesome article today, Resolution Revolution: A Better Way to Start Your Year by Christine Kane, that has me inspired to tweak my approach a bit. Kane suggests that we pick a theme word to guide us through the year... "Then, hold that word in your mind throughout the year, and let your word guide you to take action." For example, instead of setting a resolution of 'Get organized' you might choose a word such as 'Release.' Then throughout the year you remind yourself of your word and see what action that word takes in your life.

I have decided to set both goals and pick a theme word which I will write an affirmation around. I so excited to see how 2011 unfolds! What are your plans for the new year?

Pete Murray- Opportunity

I was listening to Pandora today and found some songs by Pete Murray that are awesome! I learned that he is from Australia and he was originally going to school for Sports Medicine when his friends encouraged him to pursue his singing professionally. He did and today his music is world famous! I love hearing stories about people pursuing their passions!

Abundance= Giving + Receiving

The holidays are here and Steve G Jones, Clinical Hypnotherapist, reminds us that the holidays are a time for giving and recieving. He explains that giving gives the giver joy, but as the receiver we should also be open to feeling joy. If we are open to recieve we both honor the giver and pave a way for the abundance that is meant for us in this lifetime. Abundance= Giving and Receiving! Happy Holidays!

Eagle Symbolism

Yesterday while driving to my Grandmother's nursing home I was listening to the radio. I happened to notice that two songs mentioned eagles, and after those two songs ended the band, Eagles started playing. I thought to myself, "Huh, wonder if that means anything?" This afternoon I was putting away laundry and happened to glance over at a card that I have on my bureau. I noticed at the bottom it had the word 'Eagle' in the last line. So I just did a search for Eagle symbolism and found a website dedicated to Eagle Spirituality.

Yesterday I was a little nervous about visiting my Grandmother. I hadn't seen her in a long time and while driving over there I was praying for guidance and was asking love ones in spirit to come with me. I think the Eagle was my confirmation that my prayers and requests were heard and that they were there yesterday. The visit went great and I am thankful that I went. So thank you God for sending me Eagles!

Here is the band, Eagles singing Please Come Home for Christmas. Merry Christmas everyone!

Receiving Messages Through Numbers

Do you constantly see the same number? My whole life I have always noticed 11:11 on the clock. I always thought 11:11 meant someone was thinking about me, but I've recently learned that seeing 1s means that I need to stop wasting my energy on negative thinking. In this video Dave Ferrolo explains that the numbers we see are messages from the Angels. He talks about his own personal experiences with seeing 2s and 7s and what those numbers mean. He also shares the significance behind other common numbers.

Biophobia

Have you ever driven around your neigborhood on the weekends and noticed that something was missing? Where are the children? I know I rarely see kids playing outside where I live. When I have gotten outdoors with children I have noticed that sometimes they are afraid or bored. Some children are even afraid to step on grass or get dirty. That is sad!

“Many children today find it easier to stay indoors and watch television. I worry that children do not know what they are missing. Children cannot love what they do not know. They cannot miss what they have not experienced.”  Mary Pipher, The Shelter of Each Other

What is especially scary is that the children of today, who are spending all their time indoors, are not learning to respect nature. If they are afraid of nature and are not familiar with nature how do we expect them to care for the outdoors when we are gone?

“It is quite possible for today’s child to grow up without ever having taken a solitary walk beside a stream, or spent the hours we used to foraging for pine cones, leaves, feathers and rocks – treasures more precious than store-bought ones. Today it is difficult to tear children away from the virtual world of the mall to introduce them to the real one.” Gary Paul Nabhan and Stephen Trimble, The Geography of Childhood

A new term I learned recently is Biophobia, a fear of the natural world. Do we want our children to fear the outdoors?

George Anderson: We Don't Die

I just finished reading a really fascinating book, We Don't Die: George Anderson's Conversations With the Other Side by Joel Martin & Patricia Romanowski. Through series of scientific tests and observations, Martin, a former radio dj and self-proclaimed former skeptic, provides solid evidence that George Anderson , a Psychic Medium, can communicate with spirits who have passed on. According to Anderson, our loved ones do not die, they just transition to the other side and go through different levels of spiritual conciousness. As a Psychic Medium, he is able to communicate with Spirits to deliver messages to loved ones who are still here on the earthly plane.

Here are few ideas that I took away from, We Don't Die:
  • A person's passing is often a time of "soul growth" for people who are still here.
  • The other side is not above us, but all around us. The other side runs parallel to where we are.
  • Everyone crosses over to the other side. We work our way through different levels of spiritual conciousness. Those who are negative here may start at the bottom levels, but eventually may work up to other levels.
  • Our loved ones and friends will meet us when we cross over and help us transition.
  • God doesn't judge our actions. We judge ourselves.
  • We continue to learn about ourselves and to grow on the other side. We have a mission on the other side, which may take the form of a job of sorts.
  • Our loved ones still exist, and still love and care about us.
  • It doesn't matter what religion you are here. God is not found in a building. He is found within ourselves.
I really felt like I knew more about Spirits, the other side, and how George Anderson communicates with our loved ones who are passed over by the time I finished this book. I found it a really easy read, and was disappointed when the book ended. I absolutely loved that there were numerous word-for-word transcripts of readings George conducted with bereaved loved ones. I learned a lot about the afterlife and Mediumship while reading this book!

The following Unsolved Mysteries episode discusses the life of George Anderson. Enjoy!

Spotlight on John Holland

On my iPod I have the Hay House Radio application which is a 24/7 talk radio channel devoted to mind, body and health topics. One of my favorite speakers is John Holland, a Psychic Medium from Boston. He is quirky and talks pretty fast once he gets reading, but he is very thorough. I love that he always goes out of his way to provide just one more piece of information for a caller. I decided to learn a little bit more about the man and found several videos which I have posted here.

In this Unsolved Mysteries video we learn how John was in a car accident that heightened his gift.

In this Interview with John Holland we learn about John's gifts and his thoughts on various aspects of being a Medium.

This is part 1 of an A&E Biography where John is taken blindfolded to the historic building where the Shirt Waist Factory Fire took place in the early 1900s.

In part 2 of the A& E Biography John is taken to the scene of a mobster's murder in the 1970s.

Psychics vs Mediums

Fresh Air Improves Eyesight

In this somewhat humorous video, Denise, who is nearsighted, spends a lot of time using the computer, watching tv, reading and writing indoors. After spending hours playing on the computer Denise makes sure to look at something in the distance through the window to refocus her eyes.

While watching this video I was struck by how much time Denise's mother spends making sure that Denise does not sit too close to the TV or computer screen; that she holds her book at arms length, etc. She expends a lot of energy correcting but what if she had encouraged her daughter to go outside? New research suggests that these indoor focused activities can actually cause our children to have poor vision:

Kids Who Spend More Time Outdoors Have Better Vision

Many children in America spend their days much like Denise, engaged in indoor focused activities. After watching this video I wondered how much time Denise or other children actually spend outdoors. I discovered this research:

Nickelback

I was shopping at a local salvage store looking for boots when I heard Never Gonna Be Alone playing on the store's speaker system. I discovered that to listen to the entire song I needed to stay in one spot in the shoe aisle or I couldn't hear the song. So I stood for a couple minutes pretending to look at shoes while I listened to Nickelback's song. I've been listening to a lot of classic rock lately and forgot how much I liked Nickelback's music. So I went online and found a few more Nickelback songs that I like:

Far Away

"I love you, I loved you all along.."

Never Gonna Be Alone

"Your never gonna be alone from this moment on."

I'd Come for You

"I'd always come for you."

What strange places has music called to you?

The Life of James Dean

I have heard several songs lately referencing James Dean; which got me thinking about the actor. I found this really fantastic film about his life. I never knew anything about James Dean other than the "bad boy" image Hollywood portrays. I have a much greater respect for him now.

Wow, he was a pretty sexy man!  Who else do you find fascinating?

Love at First Sight

Ran across this song by Nickasaur! and thought it was different and cute! "I'll FedEx you my love.."

I've been listening to this song by Lush for several months now. I love how dramatic the song is, and I especially like listening to it at night in the dark. Just learned tonight that this is a cover of The Gist.

Just found this song and all I can say is, "Wow! I'm falling in love!" (with this guys voice!!) Amazing!

East of Eden

Since I watched the biography about James Dean I really wanted to see him act. My family and I watched East of Eden last night, and now I am just smitten! He played such a great job as Cal. Hard to believe that was one of his first roles. He was a really good actor. Also hard to believe that this film is 55 years old. What a great movie!

What old movies do you love?

Handling Headlice

I was reading an online newsletter recently and there was a discussion about head lice. I don't know about you but I would rather be prepared in case my kids ever had head lice. I just discovered these funny but informative videos about handling head lice. Enjoy!

Edgar Cayce on Soulmates

I just watched a documentary about Edgar Cayce's views on Soulmates. I am not going to lie, the video is old (from the 80s) and it is not flashy, but the information is very clear and concise. According to this video, Cayce believed that anyone who enters our life that causes us to feel emotional (either good or bad) is a Soulmate. He did not view Soulmates in the current popular view of a one true love/mate, but felt that Soulmates are people who enter our life to help us learn life lessons. When we meet someone and feel an instant connection with them it is because our souls recognize one another and we take off where we left off with them in another lifetime. Perhaps we need to go through several lifetimes with the same people because we did not learn or grow from those experiences in a past life. I found this video was very concurrent with everything I have been reading and watching lately about souls and reincarnation. The video is in five parts but definitely worth the time to get a clear understand about Soulmates!

Decluttering?

When you need to declutter ask yourself:
1. Have I used this in the last year?
2. Is there a way I can use this item this week?
3. Is there sentimental value?
4. Do you have more than one of this item?
How to get rid of items:
1. Have a box marked 'Give Away'
2. Have a garage sale
3. Sell collections on Ebay
4. Barter or Give Away
5. Give toys to friends and neighbors with children
6. Bring things to the dump
7. My favorite--put a free sign and stick it at the end of your driveway!
For electronics check on rules in your area.

Guns n' Roses

When I was a tween I was in love with Guns n' Roses. I had posters on my walls; I wore their t-shirts with spandex pants (it was the 80s); and sprayed my bangs as high as they could go. My freshmen year of high school I got to see Guns n' Roses in concert. At the concert the band ate pizza on stage and Axl Rose through his crusts out into the audience. My friend Scott got to eat one...of course I was jealous! Here are a few really good Guns n' Roses songs.

"All we need is just a little patience..."

"Don't you cry tonight...there's a Heaven above you baby."

"Knock, Knock, Knocking on Heaven's Door..."

What is your favorite GNR song? Do you believe in Heaven?

Hoarding

Hoarding is a form of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD). It tends to be an inherited disease. Often a hoarder had a parent who also hoarded.

People who hoard isolate themselves from people, and start building realationships with stuff instead. Things always take precedence over other relationships. A lot of hoarders live on their own because they've driven everyone else away.

Many adults with this problem started collecting things as an adolescence. Most of these people tend to become extreme hoarders as they age and are not treated until they reach age 40-50.

People who hoard are not lazy or unmotivated. Hoarding is debilitating, and can affect anyone, anywhere. Interestingly, most hoarders tend to be quite intelligent and articulate. Hoarders tend to hide their symptoms and their homes from their friends and family. The problem gets worse as people become more isolated.

Throwing hoarders things away can be very traumatic to them. Hoarders develop emotional connections to their things. Hoarders need to want to change, just as an alcoholic wants to stop drinking. Hoarders may need the help of a therapist, an organizer, and patient friends and family. Even with treatment and help hoarding is a culmination of lifelong habits, and relapses should be expected.

If you or someone you know is a hoarder find out how you can help or enlist the help of a professional.

Bed Sheets

Did you wash the sheets and forget what sheet goes to which bed? Here is a simple tip to help you remember: On the bottom corner of your bed sheets or on the tag (if there is one) use a permanent marker or fabric pen and write the abbreviation for the size, such as K for King, Q for Queen, F for Full; another option would be to put the person's initial instead. Then when you go to make the beds you can tell if the sheet is the right size for the bed!

Kidney Stones

Last month, on Mother's Day to be exact, we had to take my hubby to the Emergency Room in the middle of the night. We spent 3 hours in the ER, and found out that hubby was passing a kidney stone. He passed the stone at home the next morning, but during the night he was in excruciating pain. His pain was so strong they had to give him heavy narcotics. It is a pain most of us would rather avoid!

Child Targeted Advertising

Here is an interesting article, How Shrek and Dora are Making Kids Fat, that claims that child-targeted advertising which uses cartoon characters is making our kids choose foods that are not exactly the most healthy for them. I know that my kids would choose a product with Dora on the front if they had a choice. Interestingly, even when we go through the health food sections my kids want us to get the cereals with the cute animals on them, but then they are let down when they don't like the cereal. What do you think of these marketing tactics?

The Knack- Maybe Tonight

When I was in high school (in the 90s) I loved to listen to my Dad's old records (from the 70s and 80s). Maybe Tonight by The Knack was absolutely one of my favorite songs. I often played it when friends came over too. It must have made an impact on them as well because recently one of those old high school friends contacted me to find out the name of the song. I think it is a timeless song and it's still one of my all-time favorites!

Reforming Education

Since I have been introduced to TED I have watched quite a few inspirational videos! I like that they make you think about topics you may not have thought much about before. Isn't the Internet great? I especially love videos about reforming education and how people learn. Here are three videos that will make you question our current educational model.

In this first video Sir Ken Robinson talks about how we are not all meant to do the same thing, but we are all being taught the same way. He makes a point that we are treading on our children's dreams and doing them a diservice by not recognizing their individual talents and dreams. He suggests we reform our current educational model.

Here is another video by Sir Ken Robinson about how schools take creativity away from children. He is a really great speaker!!

In the same vein as these other videos here is one by Gever Tulley at TEDxAtlanta. He says, "You can make people study, but you can't make them learn!" This video is about promoting self-directed learning.

Miss Rumphius

If you go to any touristy places in New England you are bound to run into a copy of the children's book, Miss Rumphius by Barbara Cooney. Apparently Cooney lived in Maine before she passed away several years ago.

Despite the many times I have seen the cover of this book I had yet to read it until last week when the kids begged me to read it to them. I am so glad that I did. It is a beautifully illustrated book and has such a heartwarming message: Do Something to Make the World More Beautiful.

I recommend that you read this book no matter what age you are. You may find that this book inspires you to do something to make your mark in this world!

Here's To You Mrs. Robinson...

I have always been drawn to things from decades gone by whether it be clothes, music, movies, household items, gadgets, or pictures. One particular gagdget I loved as a kid (during the late 80s/early 90s) was my friend Steve's 8-Track player that was a permanent fixture in his family's camper. Whenever I had the opportunity to visit I would beg him to play an 8-Track cartridge. My favorite song we would sing to was Mrs. Robinson by Simon & Garfunkel . Back then I didn't grasp the meaning behind the song since I hadn't seen The Graduate yet! I just liked the song and still do today!

What gadgets gone by do you fondly remember?

Getting in Shape

I just read How a Mom of Seven Got into the Best Shape of Her Life - That's Fit and found it inspiring! I like that she choose to exercise at home and to watch what she ate. She didn't do any fad diet or get a gym membership. If a Mom of 7 can lose the weight then we can too!

What the Bleep do we know?

A friend and I were talking recently about the Law of Attraction and The Secret. Specifically about how we attract things to us based on how we percieve our realities. For example, if we think the world sucks then we will attract things that suck to us. If we think the world is great we attract great things. She suggested that I check out What the Bleep Do We Know?. So recently I went onto YouTube and found the video. It is a documentary about the science of Quantum Physics and how this field is working to prove that we have alternate realities. Within the documentary was a kind of soap opera starring Marlee Matlin (a deaf actress). The whole documentary was really thought provoking. Amazingly both my little boys pretty much watched the whole thing with me (I did have to block their eyes a few times though). I think they liked it because it has really cool effects. I liked that it wasn't all just stuffy science lingo and was kind of edgy and spiritual at the same time. It kept my attention and really made me think!

Twilight Saga: Eclipse Movie Trailer

I am anxiously awaiting the release of The Twilight Saga's 3rd movie Eclipse. So I was really excited when a friend sent me a link to the official movie trailer that was aired on Oprah the other day. So I wanted to share:

I really enjoyed the books in the series and really liked the first movie. I was a little disappointed with New Moon when I saw it in theaters. I thought it was a little cheesy, but it was also 12:30am in the morning when I watched the movie. So I am hoping that this movie will be a lot better. I have heard that a new director was brought on for this one.

Go Team Edward!
